About Pulse 53

Pulse 53 are an ensemble theatre company that originated from the European Theatre Arts programme at Rose Bruford College in early 2014. The company place an emphasis on creating exciting, experimental, devised theatre. Each member of the company has a unique view on theatre through training in Europe at such establishments as RESAD (Madrid), AMU (Prague), Institut Del Teatre (Barcelona), ESAD (Murcia), EMTA (Tallinn) and VSMU (Bratislava); this means the company are able to call in to play a wide variety of techniques to create theatre that pushes boundaries and creates new mediums. The International nature of the European Theatre Arts course and the diversity within the ensemble means that Pulse 53 have an eye for creating theatre which incorporates inter-disciplinarity; and as such aims to create innovative theatre within a European context.

The company's first show "Against Nothingness or 3cm above an Empty Head" was created in collaboration with Andrzej &Teresa Wełmińscy, two of the original members of Tadeusz Kantor's; Cricot 2, a Polish experimental theatre company founded in 1955. As a result of this the company has taken a particular interest in both the style of Tadeusz Kantor and the work of Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz; the artist whose life was the subject of their first peice. Witkiewicz is a figurehead of avant-garde art and Pulse 53 have taken it upon themselves to shed light on his art and philosophy through a re-contextualisation of his life and works.
